Dizzee Rascal? HUH?

So I heard of some cat named Dizzee Rascal a while back, don't remember how but I was blown away by how weird the song I heard was. It was called "I Luv U" (scroll to the bottom of the post to play it.) I hoped that maybe I just heard the most terrible thing he ever put on wax. So, I asked a couple people that listened to him if they liked that song and sure enough they thought it was some hot shit.

Maybe I don't get it because I'm not from the U.K.? Maybe I can't get over the British accent to even give it a chance? Not trying to step on your toes about how you guys speak, just not used to hearing it in Hip-Hop. I feel like I'm alone here because he seems to be getting popular, but in my opinion the beat was shit, and his rapping was shit, couldn't even find a thing I liked.

So if anyone is feeling the same was as me, or can explain what makes him good, maybe point me in the direction of his good stuff, please leave a comment. I included the song, and the video for it if anyone doesn't know who he is, or hasn't heard it.

The good stuff would definitely be 'Fix Up. Look Sharp', from the same album.

Dizzee is awesome because he's the first in a long line of British rappers who chose to bring their own style, rather than trying to copy an outdated American gangster style.

I'm with the above. Not that I'm a fan of his work, but Dizzee got his own style, and it's very club-oriented. Keep in mind that the UK is a #1 country when it comes to dance-music.

So Dizzee is blending rap/hiphop with danceable tracks, and it just works good for people who want to bounce.

Try wikipedia for Grime(that is how this genre is called). What is shit for you is actually the thing that is awesome about it. He raps twice as fast as the beat goes. And the beat is also supposed to sound that wierd. It plays a lot with the rhythm and sounds. While people got used to a simple rhythms, UK Garage (Grime is a subgenre of UK Garage) goes with far more complicated stuff like chopped and combined rhythms.

Nah, Mecca, I'm with you on this one. Everything he kicks just bounces right off of me. I think the accent is problem #1 for me. Couple that with weak beats and you have a certified coaster on your hands.

Peace.

"music's simple but it's complex"

Outside of grime, i recommend dubstep, for beat fanatics...check Skream or burial.

well i live in london and this song isnt Hip Hop ok, does it sound familiar to big l or 2pac...NO

This is something called Grime (very popular in high skl around 2001-04) and is a sub genre from garage. garage was a dance sort of genre in the uk mainly in ldn which had abit of rapping over it etc. When So Solid Crew came out on 1999 they were uk rap I would say and hip hop was played more and more on tv around 98-01 so Grime was invented as a sub genre, influenced from us hip hop and 90s garage. grime has garage type beats and drum and base with FAST LONDON SLANG RAPPING, you think twista can rap fat you aint been to hackney eas london lol. Any way bk to dizzee i thought this was a good song, but WHY does no1 talk about Klashnekoff...Easily the best UK Hip Hop artist...check him out.

Sorry for any spelling mistakes, done this fast..

This is good stuff man! He's already got 3 albums out, just check them out. If your gonna play, crank the volume up, turn the bass up high, that's the best way to listen to it haha!
And just because something is different than what you're used to, doesn't make it crap. Not trying to teach you a lesson here, but just give it a try. ;)

He takes a few listens to get used to the accent, but he's one of the better rappers from the UK. Check out the album maths & english. This is a single off it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tUPleuj42w0

Other good songs include
pussyole
where's da G's
wanna be
bubbles

If your looking for something different, this is it, but if you want the same old stuff stick to your local radio station.

I completely disagree with the guy above me. You should definitely check out his first album Boy in da Corner and second album Showtime. It's way different from US hip hop, but if you think good hip hop is only made in the US you are ill informed.
Look a bit further! Try Roots Manuva Opgezwolle, MC Solaar.

Don't worry about it. You, just like many others, cannot comprehend anything "new" or "different". Be patient and in a few months after many more of your peers tell you what to like you will accept these foreigners.

Damn nobody mention the crew he started from ROLL DEEP- The UK equivalent to the Wu Tang Clan?
Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiieeeeeeeeeet. US hip hop is interesting with the elimination of the role of the DJ with the crowning of the producer..BUT the UK shit is top notch (Grime, Dubstep, Wiley, Klasnekoff, Kano, Skepta, etc) and nothing to fuck wit. Dizzee (although I don't think of him as the "best") did a freestyle on some BET hip show on the roof top a while ago and he tore his competition a new asshole. So, if you don't like it fine. Don't understand it, cool. But try bringing that beef to London down and your ass is grass....PS that Diz track is way old (like revealing Jim Jones as the new thing or sumthing).

Bull. I saw that same show and his shit was wack.

Fanboys, I swear...

You should check out his latest album, Math + English, its more listenable.. His first album is pure grime, and one of the dopest albums of his genre.

This is fucking terrible on every level possible. Were these beats made in fruityloops? Pure garbage.
